A Great Idea for a Rainy Afternoon
One of my favourite childhood authors has to be Dr. Suess. For countless generations, his books have been a guide through the fun times of language acquisition and development.
A personal favourite of mine would have to be the famous "Green Eggs and Ham".
I remember vividly lying on the living-room floor, nose buried in the book, making an astronomical effort to understand the sense of each and every single word. Mind you, there are only 50 words used in the entire book! It was great fun, especially when I could later act the book out, with mum playing the role of Sam-I-Am.
The rhyming sentences are ear-worms: they build on earlier words, repeat constantly, and its almost impossible to forget them at one point! There is also a wonderful rhythm to the story and the illustrations are magical!
Ah, Sam-I-Am :)
This is how it starts:
Sam-I-am: I am Sam. Sam-I-am
Friend: That Sam-I-am! That Sam-I-am! I do not like that Sam-I-am!
Sam-I-am: Do you like green eggs and ham?
Friend: I do not like them, Sam-I-am. I do not like green eggs and ham.
Sam-I-am: Would you like them here or there?
Friend: I would not like them here or there. I would not like them anywhere. I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them Sam-I-am.
I found an illustrated PDF version of the book online. Check it out:)
So, with the rain outside, why not snuggle up on the couch, with a hot cocoa and have a read of Green Eggs and Ham!
Bon appetit!
